#ABWomenSpeak - Alline Cormier

On Sunday, May 2, 2021, we joined various women's groups in Canada, including WHRC Canada, Alberta Radical Feminists, and caWsbar (Canadian Women's Sex-Based Rights) and took to the grounds of the Alberta Legislature to hold a protest.

What follows is a transcript of Alline Cormier's remarks!

A video of this speech and those of the other speakers is available on our facebook page!

Alline Cormier is a translator and retired court interpreter who self-published, last summer, a coffee table book titled What is a Woman? as a fundraising project for Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter. Last fall she sent the Prime Minister a copy of Heather Brunskell-Evans' Transgender Body Politics with a card to which 70 Canadian women from ten provinces and territories had added their name due to their concerns over the government's proposed Bill C-6.

English translation at bottom!

My name is Alline Cormier, and I am honoured to be the first provincial coordinator for WHRC Alberta. I am taking the mic today because I would like to say a few words about WHRC in French to the Francophones in the audience. In a country that has two official languages it is important that both be represented. Besides, I know that many Francophone women in Canada are just as upset about the erosion of our rights as our Anglophone sisters.

Thank you to all you marvelous, courageous women who made time to come here today to show your support for women!

English translation of French:

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon and welcome to WHRC Alberta's very first protest. My name is Alline Cormier, and I am very honoured to be the first provincial coordinator for WHRC Alberta. The Women's Human Rights Campaign is a group of volunteer women from across the globe dedicated to protecting women and girls' sex-based rights. The Declaration on Women's Sex-Based Rights reaffirms women and girls' sex-based rights and calls for the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls that result from replacing the category of "sex" with that of "gender identity." The declaration has been signed by over 17,000 people from 132 countries in collaboration with over 300 organizations.

I would like to warmly thank all the women who answered the call to support the women's cause today. Many women drove great distances to join us. They have come from Calgary, Cochrane, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon, etc. This is but our first protest in support of women, and I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again very soon.
